Stop Setting Expectations Based on What the World says You ‘Should’ Want

I've been talking with myself a lot these days. Asking more often whether what I say I want is coming from me or years of brainwashing and cultural conditioning. I’m starting to dig up my truth. And I’m tired of wanting what the world tells me to. I’m sure some of you are too.

I grew up in a middle-class household that harped on getting good grades, getting into a good university or college, and finding a cushy job with benefits that will take care of you and your future family.

I was also taught that as a woman I could only, should only, have certain aspirations in life. Marriage, kids, career, you get the point. But as time passes and I keep digging deeper, asking what I want my life to look like, the less and less the idea that forms in my head looks like what my family, friends, and society painted for me.

I’ve discovered, you can have multiple careers. That’s right, you do not have to pick just one. I am a part-time writer and part-time bartender, currently. Do I have aspirations for more? Of course! I want to grow my writing into a…
