I think it's just as common. One of the biggest pitfalls I see in western dating culture is the lack of honest communication.
I did this when I started dating my partner.
I would tell everyone else but him what I actually felt and wanted.
I find a lot of women do this too (my group of girlfriends at the time did the same).
We're scared of getting into arguments, get rejected, etc. and we're conditioned by society that we need to be 'cool' and 'chill' all the time, so we don't bring up any of our real feelings and concerns.
I've learned that both men and women need to throw this idea out the window and honestly communicate their feelings.
Otherwise, you and your partner will never be on the same page.
