Bettering Yourself Can Make you Appear as ‘Selfish’ or ‘Ungrateful’

When going on a personal growth and development journey, not everyone will like it or support you. You might tell family and friends about what you’ve learned and they may not agree. You’ll make progress and start behaving differently, but not everyone will like the new you or support the change.

I recently had a pretty uncomfortable conversation with a family member that left me very confused and sad in the beginning. I was told I came off as ungrateful and selfish at times. That was a blow I was not expecting. I wanted so badly to say something against it, but after what I have learned through counseling, and trying to be a more mature person, I chose to shut up and listen instead. And it made a world of a difference.

After having sat with myself for a couple of days (and spoken to my counselor), thinking about the words that were said, it made me reflect on my actions. And I realized that yes, some of my behavior definitely came off as selfish, but it was also part of the season of change I was, and am going through.
