Beauty Standards Make Women Cranky AF
We’ve all heard the saying ‘pain is beauty’ and no this is not a metaphor. Being ‘beautiful’ is literally painful.
For millennia women have had to deal with the opinions of others to determine their worth as members of their society. Men are also subject to their set of societal standards of attractiveness but since I am and identify as a woman I can only speak to that experience.
While growing up I always took my family’s and friend’s comments about how I looked as something normal, if anything I thought they were looking out for me and my well-being. Turns out the beauty standards that are imposed on us and that we impose on ourselves, as well as one another, can do much more damage than we originally thought. And we’re also just tired about hearing other people’s opinions.
By focusing on our outward appearance so much we stop paying attention to what’s going on inside. I didn’t realize this until I was in my early 20’s; having so much focus on my outward appearance and ignoring what was going on in my mind was turning me into a really crappy person. Just ask my family. My priorities shifted to really shallow goals that were just about money and buying things, that was it. Oh and let’s not forget the selfishness that ensued as a result.
